Glowworm Swarm Optimization

No wind conditions

Locating an odor source in the absence of wind is considered to be a difficult problem to solve. As the variant of the modified GSO algorithm proposed previously does not demand wind information, it can be used to localize an odor source even in the absence of wind. The odor environment under no wind conditions can be generated using the patch based model described. A snapshot of the odor profile is shown in Figure (a). Figure (b) shows the glowworm trajectory obtained by applying the algorithm on a concentration profile, assuming wind speed to be zero. Here the glowworm which has the highest luciferin value attracts other glowworms toward it. Once close, obstacle avoidance forces them to revolve around the glowworm with the highest luciferin value. While revolving, one of these glowworms might encounter a patch and acquire a higher luciferin value. This process, as explained earlier, will take the glowworms to the source. Once a glowworm reaches the source, it remains stationary, while others revolve around it.
