Glowworm Swarm Optimization

Mobile odor source

Here, the proposed algorithm is used to capture a mobile odor source. A mobile odor source environment is simulated using the patch based model. The follwoing video shows the capture of the mobile odor source by the glowworms using the modified GSO algorithm. The glowworms initially use the chemotactic and anemotactic strategies to get to the source location within 300 iterations. Once the glowworms arrive at the source location, they continue exploring the environment. This exploratory behavior can be attributed to the gyroscopic motions strategies. The gyroscopic motion strategy prevents the glowworms from coming close together and also forces them to move in circular trajectories. As the glowworms are continuously exploring the environment, the glowworms are able to track the mobile source. This tracking behavior can be seen in the video, where the group of glowworms is seen moving along with the odor source, even after locating the source. Here the blue dots represent the glowworms and the black patch the odor source. The odor source  moves in a circular trajectory of radius = 2m, with a velocity = 0.5 deg/sec.
